EMOTIONAL REGULATION

Helping children understand and manage their emotions is key to their growth, learning, and happiness. At Functional Focus, we work closely with children and families to support emotional development through fun, meaningful activities.

What Is Emotional Regulation?

Emotional regulation is a child’s ability to recognize, understand, and manage their emotions in a healthy way. This includes handling strong feelings like anger, frustration, anxiety, or excitement, and responding to them appropriately across different situations.

Good emotional regulation allows children to:

  • Calm themselves when upset
  • Transition smoothly between activities
  • Cope with disappointment or changes
  • Focus attention and follow instructions
  • Build positive relationships with peers and adults

It’s a skill that develops over time and is closely tied to sensory processing, communication, and self-awareness – all areas where occupational therapy can provide meaningful support.

Signs of Emotional Regulation in Children

Every child expresses emotions differently, but here are some common signs of emotional regulation difficulties that may benefit from support:

Behavioural

Frequent meltdowns or tantrums beyond expected age, difficulty calming down after getting upset, impulsivity or aggression, and/or trouble following routines or directions

Emotional

Easily overwhelmed in busy or new environments, avoiding tasks that seem frustrating, low frustration tolerance, and/or rapid mood changes

Social

Difficulty making or keeping friends, trouble playing cooperatively, and/or withdrawn or overly dependent on adults for reassurance

How an Occupational Therapist Can Help

Occupational therapists specialize in helping children build the skills they need for everyday activities – including emotional and social development. Here’s how we support emotional regulation:

Some children react strongly to sights, sounds, or textures that others don’t even notice. OTs help children learn how to process and respond to sensory input in a more regulated way.

We teach children calming techniques like deep breathing, movement breaks, fidget tools, and mindfulness activities that help them stay in control of their emotions.

Through play-based therapy, we help children recognize emotions in themselves and others, label feelings, and develop healthy ways to express them.

Using visual schedules, timers, and structured routines, occupational therapists help children better handle changes and manage daily expectations.

We work closely with caregivers, providing tools and strategies that support emotional regulation at home, school, and in the community.
